A Parsons Police Department school resource officer on Tuesday received a tip about a Snapchat list possibly threatening violence to students and faculty.
Two students reported the existence of the list to the SRO and/or the school district administration. One of the two students was snapping about the situation. This student is the only one to have seen the list. The other student did not see it.
Parsons Police Lt. Kyle Wiford said there were not multiple threats or other reports. Just the one direct statement from a student who reportedly viewed a snap of another student with the list.
Detectives are reviewing social media data from multiple sources to try to corroborate the information given by the student. They have continued to follow leads and speak to students and others throughout the day on Wednesday, Wiford said.
As of Wednesday, police found no posts or evidence to corroborate the threat. Police have been working with the school district.
Police also had an increased presence at Parsons High School Wednesday and that will continue through the week. School was opened on Wednesday.
This case remains open and active.
Police reported on social media that any threat or potential threat is taken seriously.
“We are aware of other events across the nation and partner with the Kansas Fusion Center (clearinghouse manned by local, state and federal law enforcement) to receive and share critical information across jurisdictional boundaries,” the police post said.
