Regent Linda DeGarmo opened the Sept. 10 meeting of the St. Paul Daughters of Isabella, St. Luke’s Circle, with a spiritual readying “Laugh Our Loud.” Six officers answered roll call.

Members brought food items for the Erie Food Bank. There were numerous food items donated.

The circle has 38 members. Cheryl VanLeuween Trepagnier attended as a potential new member.

Mary Jane Gouvian announced the annual Public Square Rosary Crusade will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at the parish parking lot in St. Paul. This is the 18th year for this special prayer event. The public is welcome. Refreshments and visiting will follow.

Don’t Dodge Difficulty

Don’t Dodge Difficulty FCE met Sept. 17 at Westside Christian Church. Four members tied eight quilts in the morning. After lunch, president Norma Newell called the meeting to order and led the group in the flag salute. Annette Robinson read a poem, “September,” by Kay Hoffman.

Members answered roll call by answering what new vegetable did you try as you grew up. Members reported 77 volunteer hours.

Robinson read the minutes from the August meeting and gave the treasurer’s report. Dues for next year were collected.

Members voted on officers and the same officers will carry over into 2025.

The state conference will be Oct. 7 to 9 in Chanute. Each member brought items for a box that will be auctioned off at the state conference.

Nov. 7 is the fall workshop at the Southeast Kansas Research Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.

The group also discussed Christmas activities.

Robinson had the lesson on exotic vegetables. She talked about purple Vienna kohlrabi and watermelon radishes. Kohlrabi is round and grows above the ground and tastes between an apple and a mild turnip. Watermelon radish is a root vegetable and is an heirloom variety of Chinese daikon radish. They get their name from the bright pink interior and green skin.

The next meeting will be Oct. 16.
