Chanute and Parsons tied for first place at a four-team girls tennis invitational in Parsons on Thursday, with the Blue Comets and Vikings both notching nine points.
Independence was third with six points while Coffeyville didn’t register a win.
At No. 1 singles, Chanute’s Ella Guernsey went 3-0, defeating Coffeyville’s Sarah Turner, Parsons’ Manaey Ryan and Independence’s Sarah Veile.
“Ella dominated the No. 1 singles spot with three wins, playing with her usual brand of tennis, consistency and patience,” Chanute head coach Michael DeLaTorre said.
Ryan went 2-1 for Parsons. “Manaye avenged a singles loss (earlier in the year) by beating Sarah Veile from Independence,” Parsons head coach Jane Posch said.
At No. 2 singles, Parsons’ Kadence Ball went 3-0 with victories over Julia Solorzano of Coffeyville, Leah Burnett of Chanute and Dylan Schurnbusch of Independence.
“Leah had only lost one match this year,” Posch said. “Kadence finished it off by winning 7-5 in a tiebreaker.”
Burnett’s only loss was to Ball. “Even though she lost in a close tie-breaker, I feel her best match was against Parsons after dominating in her first two,” DeLaTorre said. “She continues to get better, moving her opponents around the court and with great shot selection.”
At No. 1 doubles, Parsons’ Heidi Shultz and Laila Haviland went a perfect 3-0, taking down Coffeyville’s Stephanie Huerta and Melissa Escodero, Chanute’s Trylee Smith and Jacqueline Smoot, and Independence’s Reece Eytcheson and Laney Chism.
Smith and Smoot grabbed a pair of wins for Chanute.
“Rylee and Jacqueline won their first two matches easily, but then lost in a heart-breaking close one against Parsons,” DeLaTorre said. “Some positives in that match though. They fell behind early, and I am very pleased with how they battled and made a great comeback falling just a little short.”
At No. 2 doubles, Chanute’s Ashtyn Cummings and Kanika Marcoux nabbed two wins over Parsons’ Bailey Siu and Lexi Jones as well as Coffeyville’s Charli Gath and Lizzie Cook.
“Ashtyn and Kanika struggled in their first match, but I’m proud of them for the way they battled, winning their last two,” DeLaTorre said.
Siu and Jones’ lone win for Parsons came against Coffeyville. Independence’s Allie Denney and Sadie York went 3-0 in the division.
“They beat a Coffeyville team they had previously lost to,” Posch said of Jones and Siu.
