ALTAMONT — Spencer A. Gatewood, 30, of Altamont, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024.
Spencer Alec Gatewood was born on May 13, 1994, to Charles L. “Tuna” Gatewood II and Kristy Sue Hamilton in Parsons. He grew up and attended school in Parsons, graduating from Labette County High School in 2012.
He continued his education and played football at Fort Scott Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree and also received honors as an offensive lineman. For a few years, he played semi-pro football with the Joplin Crusaders. He also played the bass guitar for the local band Kota Lewis and The Flyers. Besides working with individuals with disabilities, Spencer worked as a bartender and server, most recently at Ballers.
Known for his big heart, Spencer never knew a stranger. He was outgoing, stubborn and loved his family and friends dearly. Some of his favorite hobbies were duck and dove hunting and playing competitive cornhole.
Survivors include his mother, Kristy Hamilton and companion, Russ Carlburg, of Chanute; two brothers, Stuart Gatewood of Olathe and Skylar Gatewood of Pittsburg; his maternal grandparents, Paul and Debbie Hamilton of Columbus and Lester and Sharon Lewis of Altamont; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Anita Gatewood of Parsons; three aunts, Patrice Kendricks (Vic) of Parsons, Vonetta Gatewood (Patty) of Pittsburg and Tammy Volz (Randy) of Topeka; and a niece, Mayari Dela Cruz-Gatewood.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Gatewood II; and two grandmothers, Ruth Hedrick and Viola Gatewood.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
