City to apply for housing development grant

Parsons city commissioners on Thursday approved a resolution to apply for modern income housing money to build homes on three lots in Parsons.

Jim Zaleski, the city’s economic development director, and J.R. Robl met with commissioners briefly.

Robl has worked with 16 other communities, including Chanute, to work through the competitive application and funding process. He said about one third of the applications receive funding and the applications are due Nov. 22.

The funding would be used for construction of the three single-family homes, commissioners heard, and will help reduce the overall cost of the project so the developer can make some money on it.

The homes would be built on city owned lots on South 13th Street. The construction also could be enrolled in the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, which offers a property tax break on the value of the improvement over 10 years in Parsons.

Commissioners agreed to have the mayor sign the resolution.

In other matters, commissioners: — Met in closed session for 30 minutes to discuss the city manager search with certain city staff and others. No action followed.

— Heard the Veterans Day parade would be using the same route as before and would need it blocked off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The route will start at Central and Crawford and travel south to Main, east on Main to 17th, north on 17th to Washington and back to Central.

— Approved hiring Burns and McDonnell for professional engineering for extending a parallel taxiway at Parsons Tri-City Airport. The cost is not to exceed $65,000.

— Heard that the new livestream site for Parsons City Commission meetings will go live on Nov. 14.

— Heard that Bettis Asphalt Co. will return to Parsons on the week of Nov. 11 to finish the overlay work.
